An Everyday Superhero: Part 3 (Meet Rachel Canouse)

Right now I would like to brag about my middle daughter, Rachel Canouse. Rachel went to South Africa on a team trip when she was 12 years old. She absolutely fell in love with mission work. The next year I decided to try out mission work as well, and joined a trip to Peru with my 3 daughters, Casey, Rachel and Elise. It was much closer than South Africa and also more affordable. Rachel was not happy. She was totally against the trip and at this young age was adamant she wasn't going. I finally got her to admit that she was afraid she would like Peru more. Well that was an understatement.

Rachel was only 13 years old when she went to San Juan de Lurigancho for the first time. She immediately felt at home...she loved the smell...she loved the food...she loved the people. She told me, "This is where I want to get married!" We visited many times and her draw to Peru was strong throughout high school & college. During her junior year at Kennesaw State University Rachel decided (mid-semester) she wanted to go down for an extended time. She went for 3 months, and every time I saw a picture of her and the things she was doing I would say "#rachelisnevercominghome."

That was 3 1/2 years ago, and Rachel has been there ever since. She was able to finish her bachelor's degree online, all while working with Make a Miracle. She hosted countless team trips from the states, seemingly every time during midterms or finals. She would work all day, then study late into the night. Her dedication was and still is incredible.

With Rachel living in San Juan de Lurigancho, Make a Miracle has been able to grow bigger than I could have ever imagined. Rachel is the bridge between all things American and Peruvian. She is even engaged to be married to a Peruvian and yes, their wedding will be in Peru.

Rachel is a superhero to us and to all the Peruvians who know her. Thank you for all you do! We love you mucho!

Un Superhéroe de todos los días - Parte 3

En esta oportunidad, voy a presumir acerca de mi maravillosa hija Rachel Canouse. Cuando Rachel tenía 12 años fue a un viaje a Sudáfrica con un equipo. Ella se enamoró absolutamente del trabajo misionero. Al año siguiente, decidí experimentar también el trabajo misionero y me uní para un viaje a Perú con mis tres hermosas hijas, Casey, Rachel, y Elise. El viaje era más cerca que Sudáfrica y también más económico. Rachel no estaba contenta. Ella se oponía totalmente al viaje, y a esta corta edad, ella estaba convencida de que no iría. Finalmente logré que confesara que tenía miedo de que le agradara más el Peru, bueno era obvio.

Rachel apenas tenía 13 años cuando visitó San Juan de Lurigancho por primera vez. Inmediatamente se sintió como en casa... amaba el olor... amaba la comida... amaba a la gente. Recuerdo que también dijo : "Aquí es donde quiero casarme". Al visitar el Perú muchas veces, su amor hacia el país fue más fuerte en la etapa de la secundaria y la universidad. En su tercer año en la universidad de Kennesaw State, Rachel decidió (a mitad de semestre) que quería ir a Perú por un tiempo prolongado. Se fue por 3 meses, y cada vez que miraba una foto de ella y todo lo que estaba haciendo, decía "#Rachelnuncaregresaraacasa".

Eso fue hace 3 años y medio, y Rachel ha estado ahí desde entonces. Pudo terminar su licenciatura en línea, todo mientras trabajaba con Make a Miracle. Organizó innumerables viajes para el equipo desde los Estados Unidos, aparentemente cada vez que tenía sus exámenes parciales o finales. Trabajaba todo el día y luego estudiaba hasta altas horas de la noche. Su dedicación fue y sigue siendo increíble.

Al tener a Rachel viviendo en San Juan de Lurigancho, Make a Miracle ha podido crecer más de lo que jamás hubiera imaginado. Rachel es el puente entre los estadounidenses y peruanos. Incluso está comprometida con un peruano y sí, su boda será en Perú.

Rachel es una superheroína para nosotros y para todos los peruanos que la conocen. ¡Gracias por todo lo que haces! ¡Te queremos mucho!
